Why “Dry Bags” Are so Important

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, adventurer, prepper, or all of the above, you most likely know what a dry bag is. But just in case you don’t understand the purpose of such bags or why everyone should have at least one, here’s a brief overview of dry bags and how they can benefit you.

UNDERSTANDING DRY BAG TYPES

There are different sizes and types of dry bags you can buy. But the main premise of every dry bag is to keep the contents inside it dry (especially in inclement weather conditions). A dry bag is generally flexible and most have a roll-top closure that is watertight when closed and secured properly.

To secure the bag in a roll-top closure design, the user must roll the top down on itself at least three times or dog-ear the top at least three times. Once this is done, the bag must be secured by clipping or securing it as instructed in the manufacturer’s instructions.

There are different types and brands of dry bags available on the market. When selecting the right dry bag for your needs, you’ll want to consider a variety of differentiating factors, including:

  • Material type: Some dry bags are made from vinyl while others are made from silnylon. Vinyl offers good durability and is strong enough to carry heavy items or items that could potentially cause abrasions in other bags. Silnylon is valued for its lightweight design and flexibility. While it is not as durable as vinyl, it comes in handy if you need to be able to stuff it into a tight space.
  • Size: You’ll notice that there are many different dry bag sizes on the market. Some dry bags are small enough to fit cell phones, money, keys, and a few other small items inside. On the other hand, there are dry bags large enough to put sleeping bags and clothing inside.
  • Intended use: When purchasing a dry bag, you’ll want to buy one that meets your intended use applications. For example, if you intend to use the dry bag on a strenuous hike that requires you to carry it around, a lightweight bag may be in your best interest. On the other hand, if you’re going on a boat trip that will expose you to waves, rain and demanding conditions, you may want to invest in heavier, more durable dry bags.
  • Closure Method: While most dry bags have roll-top closure designs, some have zipper seals. Generally, roll-top closure designs are considered to be more waterproof than zipper seals. Keep this in mind when choosing the right dry bag for your needs. To test the waterproofness of a dry bag, turn it inside out, then put water inside it. If it leaks, you may need to invest in a better bag.

These are just a few of the considerations you’ll want to keep in mind when purchasing one or more dry bags. You’ll also want to consider whether you need additional features (such as internal padding for electronics, external attachment points, and various carry options).

WHY YOU NEED A DRY BAG

If you have any concerns about potentially damaging your phone, map, communication equipment, or any other important navigation or survival items, a dry bag can help keep these items safe and functional in bad weather conditions. Additionally, a dry bag can be used as a wet bag for your wet clothing. A dry bag is just as effective at keeping water in as it is at keeping water out. So if you put wet clothing into a dry bag, you’ll keep your clean clothes from getting soiled.
